Doctor Doom's Fearfall

Location: Islands of Adventure – Marvel Super Hero Island

Height Restriction: 52”

Age Appropriateness: Older children and up

Seat Type: Molded seats with over-the-shoulder restraints

Ride Description: On Doctor Doom’s Fearfall you’re subjected to the latest invention of the Fantastic Four’s arch-nemesis. His Fearfall contraption is designed to drain the fear from its helpless subjects and convert it into energy for Doctor Doom. With the power of your terror behind his next attack, he may just be able to defeat the Fantastic Four once and for all.

When you arrive at the loading platform, you’ll notice that each side of the ride has four seats – perfect for capturing the Fantastic Four themselves. You’ll get strapped in and have a brief moment to take a deep breath before you’re off.

The ride initially shoots 150 feet straight up into the air and falls faster than gravity almost all the way back down. You then go up and down at a slower speed several more times before finally lowering back to the dock.

Getting Ready: A test seat outside the ride gives you a chance to try on just what you’re up against. The over-the-shoulder restraints fit very snugly, so you should make sure they’re comfortable and close securely if you have any concerns about fitting in the seats.

Worth the Wait: 15 minutes

Ride Restrictions: You should not ride this attraction if you:
  • are expecting
  • have a heart condition or abnormal blood pressure
  • have neck, back, or similar physical conditions
  • are susceptible to motion sickness
  • are susceptible to fear of heights
  • have a medical condition aggravated by strobe effects
  • have a medical condition aggravated by fog effects
  • have had recent surgery
Guests in wheelchairs must be able to transfer to ride seating.

Nickstuff

This store is closed. It is now Super Silly Stuff, the Despicable Me gift shop.

Location: Universal Studios Florida – Production Central

This Nickstuff store may as well be called the SpongeBob store for all the variety you’ll find here. If you’re into all things yellow and porous you’re in the right place. From slippers to penny banks, SpongeBob can be found on every product imaginable.

One of the more unique features of the store is the SpongeBob version of the classic Mr. Potato Head toy. You can select from an array of arms, legs and facial features to construct endless versions of the character. While you can buy the pieces individually in the park, you can also get the whole kit (show here) yourself out in the real world.

This store will most likely be short-lived as the accompanying Jimmy Neutron Ride is closing to make room for a Despicable Me version of the same type of attraction.

Beverly Hills Boulangerie

Location: Universal Studios Florida - Hollywood

Sometimes a greasy burger or slice of pizza is just too heavy of a meal, especially after a day of sweating your way through a theme park. Beverly Hills Boulangerie is the light, refreshing answer to your need for something that at least seems healthier. Instead of fries and breadsticks on the side, you’ll find an assortment of fresh fruit and crisp, cool potato salad. The sandwiches are available on your choice of a flaky croissant or crisp baguette.

If you have room for dessert, the counter is loaded with tempting pastry options. After you’ve inevitably succumbed to one of these sweet treats (perhaps with a cup of gourmet coffee?) your meal may end up just as filling as that burger and shake…but doesn’t everything sound a little better for you when you say it in French?

Disaster

Location: Universal Studios Florida – San Francisco

Height Restriction: None

Age Appropriateness: Any; small children should be able to handle loud noises, darkness and fire

Attraction Description: Disaster is part ride and part show with lots of engaging technology to keep things interesting. When you enter the pre-show, you’ll meet Lonnie, the Assistant Director. He’s in charge of casting so if you want to really be part of the action, this is your chance. The pre-show room also helps set up the plot for the rest experience. Lonnie explains that you’re all going to be part of the upcoming blockbuster “Mutha Nature” produced by legendary (and fictional) Frank Kincaid and starting Dwayne Johnson (AKA The Rock).

In the next part of the show, you meet director Frank Kincaid himself, played by Christopher Walken. Kincaid is projected onto the stage using “Musion” technology (also seen in Forbidden Journey) which makes him look shockingly real. He even interacts with actual props on the stage and the assistant director, Lonnie. After Kincaid has hammered home the importance of this upcoming movie, you’re ushered into the third part of the show.

In this theater, the volunteers selected in the beginning get to show off their acting skills. These bits are short and incredibly random, but you may get a kick out of watching how fellow guests react to their strange instructions. If you’re selected as a volunteer, play along and give it your all. Nothing is worse than watching a lackluster performance from someone who’s embarrassed to scream, jump and over-act in front of others.

Finally, you enter the ride portion of Disaster. Here you’re loaded onto subway cars, each equipped with a flat screen television in the front. In this part of the ride, everyone gets to be an actor. The car is equipped with cameras to film your reaction to the disaster you’re about to witness. The car leaves the dock and moves into a subway set where you’re trapped during an earthquake.

The cars tip from side to side and special effects take place all around. The ground above you collapses and a tanker slides down into the subway and explodes with lots of pyrotechnics. On the opposite side, 65,000 gallons of water pour down. Throughout the entire experience, you’re given cues on how to react, making it clear that it’s all still a movie set – something that may be reassuring to small children.

At the end, you’ll screen the finished preview for “Mutha Nature.” The clips filmed earlier in the show are interspersed with those starring Dwayne Johnson for an overwhelmingly corny and fairly hilarious finished product.

If you’ve experienced this attraction in its former incarnation as “Earthquake,” you’ll notice that much of it is the same. The subway scene, especially, is nearly identical. If you enjoyed it before, you’ll find it has a little extra entertainment value added, especially in the theater scene with Christopher Walken. If you didn’t like it as Earthquake, however, you may want to skip it this time around.

Getting Ready: The Disaster show lasts about 25 minutes, not including time spent in the queue, so plan accordingly if you’re going to meet up with others in party your later, or have dinner reservations at CityWalk.

Worth the Wait: Considering that the attraction lasts nearly half an hour, a wait of 30 to 45 minutes isn’t bad. If you’re visiting during off season, however, look for something closer to 15 or 20.

San Francisco Candy Factory

Location: Universal Studios Florida – San Francisco

If you’ve got a sweet tooth, the San Francisco Candy Factory will serve up a delectable assortment of irresistible delights. Parents enter at their own risk and should be prepared to withstand some hardcore begging in this shop. The walls are lined with tubes of colorful candy and guests can scoop out all their favorite treats.

For a dose of pure sugar, you can fill your own giant version of pixie sticks with an assortment of flavored sugars. The tubes come in lengths of 12, 18 and 34 inches. If you don’t want a night-long sugar high, this is one treat you shouldn’t keep to yourself.

Pre-packaged goodies here go above and beyond your standard bag of candy. You’ll find giant pez dispensers that hand out whole rolls of candy instead of single pieces and gummy bears bigger than your hand.

If you want to walk away with a sinful selection you just might be able to almost justify as healthy, head to the counter for a candy apple. Forget the boring coating of caramel you find at the state fair. Here you get apples coated in every imaginable combination of chocolate, candy and nuts. But hey, there is fruit in the center, after all.

Caro-Seuss-el

Location: Islands of Adventure – Seuss Landing

Height Restriction: None; children under 48” must be accompanied by an adult

Age Appropriateness: Any

Ride Description: Caro-Seuss-el is a colorful, wacky carousel appropriate for guests of all ages. In place of your traditional horses, you’ll find all manner of strange imaginative Dr. Seuss characters.

Watching over it all from above is the sweet, gentle Horton the Elephant. Check out your create for reins or a small lever. Operating this will make various parts of the animal move, giving it a whole new sense of life.

Horton Hears A Who!
Getting Ready: If you’re not familiar with Horton the Elephant, get to know him in “Horton Hears a Who” or “Horton Hatches the Egg” by adding these books to your bedtime repertoire in the weeks leading up to your vacation.

Worth the Wait: Toddlers can’t ride much else in Island of Adventure, so 30 minutes or so is a worthwhile wait time. For older children and adults, stick to 10 minutes or less.

Ride Restrictions: None. Guests in wheelchairs may remain in their chairs on the ride. Guests in ECVs will be asked to transfer to a wheelchair provided at the attraction.

The High in the Sky Seuss Trolley Train Ride

Location: Islands of Adventure – Seuss Landing

Height Restriction: 34”

Age Appropriateness: Any

Seat Type: Molded seats with a lap bar – 2 per row

Ride Description: The High in the Sky Seuss Trolley Train Ride is a slow-moving tour that gives you a birds-eye view of Seuss Landing. This attraction is unique in that it has two completely separate tracks which take you through different stories.

If you’re facing the direction that the cars will move in, the track on your left will be the one for the story of the Sneetches. The tale actually begins in the queue where you’ll see storybook pages that set up the plot line as well as the Wondrous Star-On Machine. The left tracks begins by looping through the Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous. From there it guides you through the story of the Sneeches with audio narration as you go through two interior show building scenes, over the Sneetches’ beach and around Seuss Landing.

The track on the right is a more expansive tour of Seuss Landing which loops out around Caro-Seuss-el, One Fish, Two Fish and Cat in the Hat. The audio for this track reads you the ABC’s of Seuss Landing as it introduces each sight you pass. You’ll loop over the Sneetches’ beach on this tour as well, and exit through a brief Sneetches scene at the very end.

Both tracks show off a variety of interesting rooftop characters throughout Seuss Landing, so make sure you look up and around as well as down to catch all the fun. Both sides of the ride are approximately 3 minutes in length.

Getting Ready: Read through your favorite Dr. Seuss stories in the weeks leading up to your visit and you’ll be sure to recognize characters from “The Sneetches,” “If I Ran the Circus,” and more throughout Seuss Landing.

Worth the Wait: Seuss fans who know how to enjoy a fanciful tour of whimsy will find plenty of interesting sights and sounds in the queue, and won’t mind a wait around 45 minutes. If you’re anxious to move on to serious thrill rides, hold out for a 10 or 15 minutes wait time.

Ride Restrictions: You should not ride this attraction if you:

  • are expecting
  • have a heart condition or abnormal blood pressure
  • have neck, back, or similar physical conditions
  • are susceptible to motion sickness
  • are susceptible to a fear of heights
Guests in wheelchairs must be able to transfer to ride seating.

Shrek's Ye Olde Souvenir Shoppe

Location: Universal Studios Florida – Production Central

The Shrek gift shop carries everything the ogre or ogress could want, from quirky ogre ears to an assortment of Fiona’s princess accessories. You’ll find all your standard products like tees, cups, key chains, toys and plush dolls as well as a few fine figurines of film characters.

Medieval mavens can get their fill of elaborate weaponry here with swords ranging from $95 to $250. You’ll exit through the store after watching Shrek 4-D, but if you want some time to browse (as I would before dropping two bills on a souvenir weapon) stop in between show dumps when you can miss the press of people.

One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish

Location: Islands of Adventure – Seuss Landing

Height Restriction: None, but children under 48” must be accompanied by an adult

Age Appropriateness: Toddlers to children – though whimsical adults may enjoy the ride too

Seat Type: Semi-enclosed fish with a single flat seat

Ride Description: It seems nearly every theme park has at least one of these simple, spinning kiddie rides – and for Islands of Adventure it comes in the form of the colorful incarnation of Dr. Seuss’s “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.”

Each fish on the ride can comfortably fit two guests – or possibly three if at least two are small children.

The fish spin around, suspended over a circular pool of water and a series of fountains spray water at you as you spin. The fountains are timed to the music, and if you listen carefully you’ll hear directions on how to avoid getting wet. Each car has a knob that controls its height – moving it up or down, and careful placement may just keep you dry. Then again – where’s the fun in that?

One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish (I Can Read It All by Myself)
Getting Ready: Reread “One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish” with your kids as you’re gearing up for your vacation and see if you can recognize the fish from the book on this ride, and throughout Seuss Landing.

Worth the Wait: For older guests, 10 or 15 minutes is the most you’ll want to wait. For toddlers who can’t get on many theme park attractions, 20 or 25 minutes is worthwhile.

Ride Restrictions: You should not ride this attraction if you:
  • are susceptible to motion sickness
Guests in wheelchairs may stay in their chairs on the ride. Guests in ECVs will be asked to transfer to a wheelchair provided at the attraction.

Oakley

Updated 1/3/2012 - The Amity Oakley location is now CLOSED

Location: Universal Studios Florida – Amity/Islands of Adventure - Super Hero Island

The Oakley store has two theme park locations at Universal Studios Orlando. So you can rest assured that no matter what park you're in, you can get a killer set of shades to protect you from the Florida sun.

The Oakley store in Universal Studios Florida (pictured above and right) fits in perfectly with the coastal vibe of the Amity stretch of gift shops. If you ignore the towering shark strung up a few feet away in front of JAWS you could almost believe that you’re taking a leisurely stroll along a weather-worn boardwalk in Anywhere, USA.

*With JAWS scheduled to close on January 2, 2012, you can expect most of Amity to soon see a makeover, and this shopping location may not outlast the ride for long*

Across the property in Super Hero Island (pictured below) you'll find another store marked by the signature Oakley symbol. This one has a sleeker look and feel, geared toward equipping superheros (or villains) with some slick shades. Set back into the rows of shops lining the streets, it's easy to miss if you're not careful, so keep an eye out if you're interested in browsing these sunglasses over at IOA.

Predictably, both small Oakley gift shops are stocked full of all the latest sunglasses. If you’re a fan of the brand, this is a great stop for checking out the newest trends and picking up a pricey, but useful, souvenir. The stores also stocks some accessories, like bags, but the main draw is the shades.

Terminator 2: 3D

Location: Universal Studios Florida – Hollywood

Height Restriction: None; small children can lap sit

Age Appropriateness: Small children and up provided they can handle very loud noises and darkness

Seat Type: Theater seats with limited motion; non-moving seats are available

Attraction Description: Terminator 2: 3D is an innovative theatre show that combines 3D film with live actors and special effects so the action literally jumps out of the screen and takes place all around you.

Before you enter the theater you’ll stand through a 5 minute preshow that sets up the plot line. You’ll meet Kimberly, the head of Cyberdyne PR, who’s there to give you a VIP tour of the facility and demonstrate Cyberdyne’s new technology. However, it’s not long before John and Sarah Conner enter the scene to warn you of the dangers that Cyberdyne poses to humanity. They interrupt the promotional video during the preshow, but Kimberly is determined to continue with the tour, so you head on into the theater. Here you’ll don your 3-D “safety” goggles for the robot demonstration.

Once again the Conners interrupt things, but this time by literally dropping in from the ceiling. From there the action really starts to heat up as the T-1000 emerges from the 3D screen and Kimberly meets an untimely end. Before anyone else is harmed, the Terminator himself makes his grand entrance on a motorcycle to save the day.

If you’re concerned about loud noises, cover your ears when Terminator makes his motorcycle entrance. He has two extremely loud shots with his gun. After the second one, you’re safe to uncover your ears for the rest of the show. There is other gunfire but it’s much more subdued.

The ensuing battle for the remainder of the show involves the Conners and Terminator going in and out through the 3D screen as they defeat the T-1000 and T-1,000,000 and ultimately destroy the central core of Cyberdyne’s Skynet system. Prepare to get sprayed with water, engulfed in smoke and dropped about an inch in your seat. Aside from the drop, which occurs at the end of the action, the seats don’t move. However, you can opt for a non-moving seat.

Terminator 2 - Judgment Day
Getting Ready: If you’re a fan of the Terminator films, catch up on the first two movies before your visit and you’ll be sure to catch on quickly to the storyline of this show. If you’re completely unfamiliar with the Terminator series and want to make sure you catch all the ins and outs of what’s happening, show up to the show about 20 minutes early to catch the whole queue video, which will get you up to speed.

Worth the Wait: Show up 10 to 15 min before show time and you’ll almost definitely get in, without having to waste much time in line.

Theatre Magic Shop

Location: Universal Studios Florida – Hollywood

The Theatre Magic Shop is tucked neatly away beneath the Williams of Hollywood sign. This is a fun little stop for magic buffs if you’ve got some time to kill. Inside you can watch a brief magic show showing off the very supplies you can buy in the store. Many of the kits include DVDs to help beginners get acquainted with the trade. This is a mildly entertaining diversion, but the show is more product demonstration than actual attraction, so you may not want to sit through it unless you’re actually interested in finding new magic tricks to add to your repertoire.

Schwab's Pharmacy

The name of Schwab’s Pharmacy may throw you off, but this is the place to go if you’re in the mood for something sweet, cold and sinfully delicious. The Blues Brothers Show

Location: Universal Studios Florida – New York

Age Appropriateness: All

Show Description: The small nondescript stage on the gritty streets of Universal’s New York is easy to miss between shows, but when the Blues Brothers are in full swing you won’t be able to pass by without getting a little groove in your step. “Jazz” the saxophone player warms up the crowd just before Jake and Elwood cruise down the street in the Bluesmobile to start each show. During their performance the iconic duo is joined by Mabel the waitress’s strong voice as well as Jazz’s smooth accompaniment.

Getting Ready: If you want a prime spot by the stage, show up a few minutes early to claim your spot. Guests who are comfortable watching from a distance can take a seat on the steps of storefronts on the opposite side of the street.

Universal Gears Up for HHN 2011

© 2011 Universal Orlando Resort. All Rights Reserved.
Preparations for Halloween Horror Nights 2011 are in full swing at Universal Studios Florida. If you've been to the park recently you may have noticed the queues shortened for rides such as Jaws and Disaster to make way for construction of the sprawling haunted houses that are the highlight of the event. But the houses aren't the only thing that will give you a chill.

Nearly every inch of the park is transformed by night for Halloween Horror Nights and you'll be hard-pressed to find even a few feet of walkway where you won't have all your senses assaulted by the horrifying sights, sounds and even scents. Scaractors are far from being relegated to the confining walls of a house. You'll find them everywhere, roaming the streets looking for their next victim.

The few hints that have been released so far about this year's event point toward a casino theme, playing on the number 21 (think blackjack), since this is the 21st annual Horror Nights event. The only character we can guarantee you'll see at this point is The Thing, in honor of the upcoming Universal film. Teasers are being released from time to time to hint at more details. You can see what you make of the most recent one below.

The event begins September 23 and advance tickets are available now. Florida residents can get discounted tickets with the UPC from any coke product.

E.T.'s Toy Closet & Photo Spot

Location: Universal Studios Florida – Woody Woodpecker’s Kidzone

The E.T. gift shop is tucked away from the main drag a little bit so you might miss it if you aren’t careful. Naturally the E.T. Adventure ride exits this way, but the gift shop is a must-see even if you decide to pass on the flying bicycle journey.

Anyone who’s familiar with E.T. will instantly recognize the plethora of movie references in the merchandise here. Naturally you’ll find E.T.’s favorite candy, Reese’s Pieces, as well as Reese’s Peanut Butter cups. If you want a more lasting version of this piece, you can get plush versions of the Reese’s candy bag as well. All the hoodies in this store are red – a no-so-subtle nod to Elliot’s attire for most of the movie.

Additional film merchandise includes E.T. toys, plush dolls, keychains and t-shirts. Solar system-themed toys such as “Moon in My Room” fill out the inventory.

The other main draw of this gift shop is the unique opportunity to get souvenir pictures taken in the back of the store. Two backdrops are available for guests to pose with. One features a bicycle you can climb on, with E.T. in the basket and the full moon glowing behind you. The second setting is E.T. in the closet wearing a floral shirt and blonde wig with clothing and toys surrounding him. The closet backdrop includes two small benches and is ideal for visitors who want more than one person in their picture.

Watch the original “E.T. Extraterrestrial” before your visit if you get a chance so you'll really appreciate this shop. This truly classic film is a gem today’s parents can share with their kids while reminiscing about the time they first saw E.T. as a child themselves.

Check your park map for performance times for the band out front to make sure you get the full experience.

Lombard's Seafood Grille

Location: Universal Studios Florida - San Francisco

For a comfortable table service meal with a bit of seaside flair, head to Lombard’s Seafood Grille. Situated at the end of a pier, this restaurant offers peaceful lagoon views. The interior décor fits perfectly with the theme of the restaurant and features a fountain and salt water aquarium.

The fare is a little bit pricier than the park’s ample quick service options, but you’ll also find that the bulk of the menu veers off of the burger and pizza options found elsewhere. Traditional salads and chicken sandwiches will satisfy those with a craving for something familiar while fried calamari, lobster bisque and crabcake or cod sandwiches provide a distinctly coastal element. If you're in the mood for a bite of seafood this is the best place in the park to find it.
