The expansion at Universal Studios Florida that took over what was once Amity will now be the London of Harry Potter lore. Behind the London facade sits Diagon Alley. The Hogwarts Express will connect USF with the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in IOA. The announcement also confirmed that the massive show building we've all been seeing will become a thrill ride based on Gringotts Bank. A restaurant and several shops are slated to appear in the expansion as well. Can't say we're surprised, but at least fans can begin planning their Potter-filled vacations for 2014 with confidence now.
How tall to you have to be to ride?

For your safety, many of the rides at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure have height restrictions.

For these rides, a height sign is located outside the attraction's entrance. If you suspect that a member of your party may be too short, please stop and have them checked. Sneaking past the first height sign will just result in your child getting measured further on - potentially creating a very disappointing situation after a long wait in line. For more tips on height signs, please see our post: How to Handle Height Signs.

Here are the current height restrictions for all of the attractions at the Universal Orlando Resort:

Why do you have to be over 48” to ride alone?

The Universal Orlando Resort has a strict safety policy stating that if a person is less
than 48” tall they have to experience many attractions with a supervising companion. A
supervising companion should be an adult or older sibling.

This ride makes me think I’m going to lose my shoes. Should I leave them in a
locker? Can I set them off to the side and get them after I ride?

Please bring your shoes with you on every attraction at Universal Orlando. In case of a ride evacuation, your shoes will be needed to protect your feet. Here are some tips for protecting your shoes on various attractions:

Dragon Challenge

There are two ways to keep your shoes here: take them off and place them on your seat before sitting down, or keep you ankles crossed for the entire ride.

Dr. Doom’s Fearfall

Sit down then kick your shoes off. Once this ride is in motion, no one will enter your ride area, keeping all of your stuff very secure. Also, you’ll be finishing the ride exactly where you started, so you won’t have to go far without your shoes.

Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges

There is a large covered area in the center of the boat that is designed to (hopefully) keep important belongings dry. Once seated, place your shoes in this covered area for your best chance of keeping them dry. However, this is not a guarantee. A good rule of thumb for this and other water rides is to leave anything you don't want to get wet behind. While you need to have your shoes with you, you could bring a pair of sandals that you wouldn’t mind getting wet to wear on the water rides rather than your comfortable
walking shoes.
The Universal Orlando Resort offers a variety of attractions from roller coasters to water rides. Many of these do not allow loose items and therefore offer a free locker for the duration of the ride. To ensure the quickest and most enjoyable experience, it's always a good idea to be prepared for these restrictions before you hop in line.

Every theme park handles things differently and the rules that applied at Disney World or SeaWorld may not be in place here. These FAQs will help you navigate the Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure Attractions with bag restrictions.

If you have a question that's not answered below, feel free to email us. We'll write you back right away, and may even publish your question in a future post.
Can I take my bag/stuffed Minion/Butterbeer Mug/overly large camera on the ride?

If you're going into a show, yes. If it's a thrill ride, probably not. Any ride at Universal Orlando that doesn’t allow loose items offers lockers that are free while you are riding. A full list is provided below.

How do the lockers know if I’m still riding?

There is a locker attendant located at each attraction locker area, and this person monitors the current wait time. When the wait time for the ride goes up, they adjust the amount of free period accordingly.

My locker won’t open unless I pay. But I was on the ride. Help!

At each attraction locker area, there is a locker attendant. Find this person and explain your situation to them. Chances are there’s a reason why you went over your time, such as a brief attraction down time. The attendant is able to see how long your belongings have been in your locker, and they are more than willing to assist in getting your stuff out.

What sorts of things should I leave in my locker?

Anything that doesn’t easily fit in your pocket should be left behind. Things like glasses, wallets, cell phones, and shoes can all come along. In fact, of all of these things, definitely bring your shoes. Guests must have their shoes and shirts with them at all times while riding rides at Universal Orlando.

Is there an alternative to using the lockers?

If your entire party is riding, you'll need to place all your loose belongings in the lockers provided. If you have someone who's staying behind, it may be easier to leave your items with them. Parties with a child who is too short to ride can leave their bags with the person who's waiting with the child. This allows you to keep your diaper bag and other essentials with you while you're waiting in line - a must for long wait times with small children.Universal Landinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06398843906144607117noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3994401000783966815.post-67206488638706562602013-04-03T08:00:00.000-04:002013-04-03T08:00:02.940-04:00Simpsons Area Construction Update

Construction beside The Simpsons Ride

On a recent visit to Universal Studios Florida, we discovered that several construction walls near The Simpsons Ride have been removed, revealing the facades of a few new buildings. True to the prevailing rumors, one looks to be a replica of Moe’s Tavern, while another is strikingly similar to a Krusty Burger.

As avid Simpsons fans, we were able to compare the facades at Universal Studios Florida with “The Simpsons Tapped Out" app. The Moe’s Tavern and Krusty Burger are definite matches. However, the third is still a mystery. Our current internal debate is whether this looks like another fast food establishment known as the Gulp ‘N Blow, or the Phineas Q. Butterfat’s 5600 Flavors Ice Cream Parlor. The ice cream place would make sense, as there’s already a fast food establishment here with the Krusty Burger. As Kent Brockman always says, “Only time will tell.”

Compare these facades and let us know what you think below!

Entering Jurassic Park is an experience straight out of the movie. The iconic park sign with flickering torches towers above and the unmistakable theme song envelopes you as you step though into a world out of time. This is the largest of the islands in Islands of Adventure, covering 21 acres.

This island is created with authenticity in mind. The plant life was specially selected to resemble prehistoric trees and ferns from the Jurassic period. The rustic rope fences along the walkways are only the first line of defense. Further back in the foliage you can see the electrified fences that separate you from the dinosaurs. If you have any doubt that you're surrounded by prehistoric wildlife, just take a moment to listen. You'll hear the distinct trumpeting calls of dinosaurs echoing from the dense vegetation.

Everywhere you look you'll see dinosaur-themed elements that are accurate to what you would expect from John Hammond's theme park. This is surely what he hoped that it would be. The trash cans feature peaceful dinosaur silhouettes parading around them. The streets have the imprints of ferns and leaves. Even the light fixtures feature three-toed dinosaur claws around each orb. If you ever wanted to step into the movie and see Jurassic Park the way Hammond hoped it would be, this island is as close as you'll ever get.
You can enter Jurassic Park from Toon Lagoon or a bridge from the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. A second bridge connects Jurassic Park to The Lost Continent, allowing you to bypass the Wizarding World. However, this bridge isn't always open. It's located off to the right of the Watering Hole, near the back of the Discovery Center if you'd like to check.

Photo Ops

Jurassic Park is filled with exciting photo opportunities, from dinosaurs and vehicles you'll easily recognize from the films, to panoramic views of other areas in the park. The T-Rex in particular is a very special photo opportunity. Here you'll find a new type of photo technology that allows you to include your whole party in one perfectly framed photo, without relying on the dubious skills of a friendly-looking stranger. Scan your park ticket, wait for the red numbers to count down, and pose for your picture. You can check out the photo at the front of the park on your way out.

Across from Jurassic Park Outfitters, a couple photo booths offer photo cards and photo strips. This is another handy option if you want to include a couple people in the shot without holding the camera out in front of yourself or asking a stranger for help.

You'll find a less technologically advanced photo op near the DinoStore, where the Spinosaurus from Jurassic Park III is poised above another JP jeep. If you're interested in posing by a jeep sans dinosaur, there's a much less crowded photo op for you down the path beside the Watering Hole. Additional dinosaurs can be found inside the Jurassic Park Discovery Center.
Characters

Though there aren't any straight-from-the-movie characters in Jurassic Park, you can spot a dinosaur caretaker in the streets with a baby dinosaur from time to time. Keep your eyes open for this rare find.

Dining in Jurassic Park often gives you the sensation of eating in John Hammond's dream of a dinosaur-themed park. The Burger Digs is reminiscent of the cafeteria where Tim and Lex encounter the raptors, and Thunder Falls Terrace is surely the elegantly appointed restaurant that would have embodied Hammond's "spare no expense" ideal. Dining options in Jurassic Park include:

The Burger Digs: Burgers and chicken; counter service; indoor dining room

Height signs are a necessary part of any theme park. Roller coasters and thrill rides have mandatory height requirements for the safety of all riders. Despite how it may seem, these restrictions were not put in place to torture the smaller members of your family or incite tearful temper tantrums. They are there, quite simply, to make sure that everyone leaves the park as healthy as they were when they came in.

Having spent an extensive amount of time in theme parks, we've seen both the good and the bad of parent reactions to height signs. In the vast majority of cases, situations surrounding these height restrictions can be managed with smart parenting. Children typically feed off of the emotions of the party as a whole - and parents in particular. If you follow these steps, you can navigate height signs easily.

Measure Before You Go

It's helpful to have some general idea of how tall your child is before you leave for your vacation. To stay on the safe side, measure your child barefoot. Practice standing up straight and tall so he'll be prepared for being measured at height signs within the park.

If your child is within half an inch of a particular milestone, don't promise him anything in this height range. If he looks like he's just over 38" tall, by all means get excited about those attractions in the 36" range. When it comes to the 38" attractions, maintain that you'll just have to see when you get there.

Measure Outside the Ride

The entrance to The Incredible Hulk Coaster

If you have a child who may not meet the height restrictions for a certain attraction, always look for the height sign outside the attraction and have a team member measure your child there. A team member will usually stop you to measure, but on a busy day you may be able to sneak into the queue. This will just result in a major disappointment further down the line if your child is too short. They will be measured before getting on the attraction, and if they don't meet the requirement, you'll be sent to the exit regardless of how much time you wasted standing in line. Always check first.

Don't Interfere with the Measuring Process

Encourage your child to stand up tall and hold his head straight for the measuring process, but do not get down on the ground and begin measuring yourself. This is the team member's job and your interference only makes it more difficult. Your child's head must hit the height stick in order for him to ride. No matter how close he is, if he doesn't touch he won't be riding.

Don't celebrate success until the team member lets you know that your child is indeed tall enough to ride. Too many times parents see a child that is very close and begin clapping and cheering far too soon. This just accentuates the disappointment if the child cannot actually ride.

Keep Your Cool at All Times

If your child is too short, don't scream, argue, sigh audibly, or make a sad face. Don't do anything to indicate that this is a bad thing. After all, it's no one's fault that your child can't ride. Smile, thank the team member, and head excitedly to the next attraction. Congratulate your child on standing up tall and holding still to be measured. Many children who are too short for an attraction don't even fully comprehend what they're missing. If you don't let on, they'll never know.

Make the Wait a Treat for Too-Short Riders

There's no need for your entire party to skip every attraction that your child is too short for. At the Universal Orlando Resort, you can all wait in line together. Use this wait time as a great opportunity for that family bonding that you always hope for on vacation. Keep your eyes open for some of the cool decorations and theming that you find in the queue. Play word games. Do what you can to enjoy this time.

Child Swap Wait Area for Spiderman

When you get up to the ride, at least one member of the party must wait with the shorter rider in a special child swap waiting area. In some attractions, such as Shrek 4-D and Spiderman, you'll have a television with cartoons to watch. These areas are often air conditioned and offer a comfortable place to sit and rest for a few minutes. When the first round of riders gets off, the individual who was waiting will get right on the ride without waiting in line again. As long as one person stays with the child, others can ride twice.

Bring some special treats to keep young children entertained while they're waiting in these areas. Keep these treats for the shorter children only, so they get to play with something fun that's just for them.

If one of the adults in your party is passing on the attraction completely, this individual can take the child to another attraction, or off to explore some gift shops while others ride.

Understand that Every Case is Unique

Though it doesn't happen often, from time a time a child will get onto a ride once but be stopped a second a time and deemed too short. You may hit the height sign for one ride that says 38" inches but fall too short of the next 38" ride. Measure for each and every ride if your child is in that delicate area where they're just barely hitting a certain height. If you can't ride, just move on.

Can you complain and ask for a manager? Sure. Do you have the option of complaining to Guest Relations? Of course. It's up to you how far you want to press the issue, but keep in mind that your attitude sets the tone for the rest of the party, and you can always shrug it off, move on, and find something else to do. There are so many options that you should never be lacking in choices for every member of your party.

The Bottom Line

Height signs can be a hassle for everyone involved, but they are there to protect you and your children. If your child is even a fraction of an inch too short, there's no need to risk their safety for a minute or two of thrills. Carefully research the kid-friendly options in your park of choice so you have plenty of safe alternatives up your sleeve for small children.Universal Landinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06398843906144607117noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3994401000783966815.post-55468356558610943832013-03-10T18:58:00.000-04:002013-03-10T18:58:20.919-04:00The Supply Vault: Transformers Gift Shop

Updated March 10, 2013

Fact:

Transformers: The Ride is slated to open in the summer of 2013. The gift shop for the ride is already open and Transformers stilt walkers are on hand during the day for photo ops.

Extensive construction around Simpsons: The Ride indicates an expansion to this area of the park. This was heavily teased in a recent newsletter to annual passholders which features a picture of the Simpsons next to a promise for future updates about park construction.

Construction along Turkey Lake will be the site of a fourth Universal hotel, the Cabana Bay Beach Resort. Reservations are available for the resort as early as March 31, 2014.

Rumor:

The Simpsons expansion will include at least two restaurants to replace the International Food and Film Festival. The facade clearly depicts signs that resemble the Krusty Burger and Moe's Tavern. A third sign in the center looks suspiciously similar to that of Phineas Q. Butterfat's, though no announcements have been made to substantiate this (we just like ice cream).

The waterfront Simpsons construction will include another attraction in the area, though the size of the construction site would necessitate something relatively small.

The massive construction project taking place where Amity once was will become London from the Harry Potter books. This is rumored to include a Gringott's Bank roller coaster ride, the Leaky Cauldron, and several shops from Diagon Alley.

The construction wall in the Lost Continent beside Hogsmeade marks the spot of one of two stations for the Hogwarts Express to connect Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure. The other station will be somewhere in the USF expansion.

Stay tuned for future construction updates as they become available!

The newest addition to CityWalk is a fantastic little shop called PYQ (pronounced "pick"). This small store is like a brick and mortar Perpetual Kid with a dash of the apartment wares typically found in shops like Urban Outfitters thrown in. You'll find all the bizarre and awesome little gadgets you didn't know you needed till you entered, but can't live without when you leave.

If you want a taste of PYQ from the comfort of home, shopping online at the sites mentioned above will give you a great sample of this type of merch. The finger monsters that you'll find in a glass jar at the counter at PYQ are often known to stow away as a surprise extra in Perpetual Kid orders.

To find PYQ, turn right when you get to the end of CityWalk's main drag and you'll find it on the right as you're headed to USF.Universal Landinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06398843906144607117noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3994401000783966815.post-67508209212253996032012-09-24T12:13:00.000-04:002012-09-24T12:13:16.595-04:00Halloween Horror Nights 22 Ticket Information

Halloween Horror Nights is arguably the biggest event on the Universal Orlando calendar every year. To make sure that the general public gets the best bang for its buck, Universal offers a wide selection of tickets and prices to make this year's event as exciting as possible. All of the prices listed are before applicable taxes.

Florida Residents
Lucky enough to live near the resort? You may be entitled to a hefty price cut for HHN tickets. Bring the UPC of any specially marked Coca-Cola Classic, Sprite or Coke Zero case or a limited edition cup from a Burger King, and your Florida ID, and receive up to 50% off general admission to the event. Be warned, this discount does NOT work the day of the event. Tickets MUST be purchased at least 24 hours in advance.

Single Event Night Tickets

General admission to a single night of the event is $88.99. If you are planning on visiting the event even one more time this year, it is advisable to go ahead and grab one of the multi-night passes, which are listed below.

Frequent Fear Passes

These passes allow the ticket holder unlimited access to HHN 22 on selected nights throughout the entire run of the event. Please see below for full details on each pass. Halloween Horror Nights Expresses are available for add-on, but quantities are limited. The purchase of these tickets in advance is suggested. The HHN Express will only grant one entrance per house or attraction per day.

Rush of Fear Passes:
This pass gives the bearer 10 nights of terror. The dates for this ticket are September 21, 22, 27, 28, 29, 30 and October 4, 5, 6, 7. Just buying the ticket will run you $69.99 in advance or $88.99 at the gate. Add HHN Express to make the total ticket price $179.99.

Frequent Fear Passes:
Ten nights not enough? How about 15? September 21, 22, 27, 30 and October 4, 7, 11, 14, 17, 18, 21, 24, 25, 28, 31. This ticket is $81.99 in advance and $88.99 at the gate. The HHN Express option for this pass is also $179.99. If you're going to buy a ticket at the gate, this is the one to go with. It is the same cost as the one event night ticket, and is the same price as the Rush of Fear Pass.

Frequent Fear Plus Passes:
This ticket gains you access to 20 nights worth events. September 21, 22, 27, 28, 30 and October 4, 5, 7, 11, 12, 14, 17, 18, 19, 21, 24, 25, 26, 28, 31. The cost is $96.99 in advance or at the gate, with the HHN Express option bringing the total to $229.99.

Stay & Scream Upgrade

Already in the parks playing during one of the event days? Your regular ticket can be upgraded to an event ticket for a minor cost.

- Sunday through Thursday: $36.99
- Friday: $51.99
- Saturday: $66.99

HHN Express Add-On

The price of adding on the HHN Express option to a single night ticket varies by the night. By purchasing these passes, the bearer is granted Express access to each house and operating attraction once during the evening.

Typically, the lower priced nights will be less crowded, while the higher priced event evenings will be much more crowded. The HHN Express is sold in limited quantities, so advanced purchase is recommended.
I’ve never actually visited HHN before. This was my first
time and it was quite an experience. Arriving in the main plaza outside the
security gates was sure an eye opener. It was super busy. There were several
thousand people all waiting around to be put through a metal detector. There
were maybe twelve places to get checked out, leading to a very long wait out
front. I asked Larry, an HHN veteran, if it was busy like this every year and
he told me that it is.

Once through security and into the park, we made an
immediate right and went through Hollywood.
Though there were set pieces in place and plenty of giant fog machines, there
was not a Scare Actor to be seen. We weren’t overly concerned about this as it
wasn’t quite 7:30 yet and still very much daylight. This was the same as we walked
through central park on our way to Kidzone.

We arrived in Kidzone and got in line for the House of
Horrors. According to the map, this particular house was scheduled to open at
7:30. Due to apparent queue issues, this venue didn’t open till almost 8:00.
Knowing that the houses were set up in a way similar to last year, Larry knew
that starting here would give us the best chance to see all the houses. So we
waited until it opened.

Though it was only the first house of the night, I already
knew that this was more than likely going to be one of my favorite houses.
Though it wasn’t overly scary, it was entertaining and neat to look at. All of
the Scare Actors and all of the sets were in black and white, illuminated by
black light. This maze featured characters like the Wolf Man, Frankenstein’s
Monster and the Creature from the Black Lagoon. This house was a great place
for a chicken like me to start. Since it wasn’t scary, it gave me a sense of
security that would continue to grow though the evening.

According to Larry, this house is where the best house of
HHN 21, the In-Between, was located. This is the first year the Alice Cooper

This was the house that I was looking forward to the least.
I’m not a Zombie fan. They really scare me. And this house was the first time
we actually had to wait in line. It took nearly an hour, but we were able to
enter into the derelict Emergency Room featured in Season One of the television
series. Larry got his first good scare of the night when the iconic “Don’t Open

standard house.

I think the main reason that this house failed to thrill me
was that I was expecting much more from the Zombies. In the movies, Zombies are
unstoppable creatures, slowly lumbering after you only to catch and kill you.
As you go into the house, this is what you have in mind. But as you walk
through, you realize that the Scare Actors aren’t going anywhere. They pop up,
get their scare, and return to the shadows to await their next victim. Needless
to say, I was generally unimpressed with this house.

This house redeemed my faith in HHN as being a place to be
entertained. As we entered the ancient cathedral, a giant gargoyle rises from a
crouch position right in front of us. All this guy did was stand up, and it was
the coolest thing I had seen all night. I’m a big guy, about 6’0, but this Scare
Actor must have been close to 7’ tall. After that, it was one awesome sight
after another. Bat creatures were hanging from the ceiling, and would flap
their wings and fly around the rooms. At one point, the scene was us walking
across a scaffold 70’ above the church sanctuary. Here’s the deal with this: we
were not any higher off of the ground than when we entered the building. This
illusion was so well done that I stood there as long as I could trying to
figure out how they were doing it. It was obviously a bit of forced
perspective, but it was so perfectly done, I couldn’t see the reality of it.

Though, again, I wasn’t overly scared (maybe I’m not the

we exited the building.

I had high hopes for this house. While preparing for my
first visit to HHN, I found that in years past there was a house that wasn’t a
traditional haunted house. The house I read about used special effects to cause
things to happen like they would in an actual haunted house. It was designed to
be more of a psychological scary place, than a physically scary place. This
house, designed after a “real” haunted house in Ohio, was a traditional haunted house with Scare
Actors jumping out and giving the guests a good start. The best part of this
house was the usage of the “Pepper’s Ghost” effect. As we came around a corner,
in front of us was the image of a bloody spectral woman. Larry, thinking he was
clever, tried to figure how the effect was being preformed by sticking his head
around a blind corner. He figured out the effect, all right. As soon as he
looked around that corner, the Scare Actor performing the illusion was
immediately in his face, screaming like a banshee. We all had a good laugh,
and, yes, Larry would eventually change his soiled pants. All in all, though it
wasn’t what I was hoping for, it was entertaining and scary.

Going in, I knew this house wasn’t designed to be a terror
fest. Designed by the comedy magicians Penn & Teller, this house was
expected to be this year’s “joke house.” And, let me tell you, it was a joke
alright. The 3D was very poorly done. The Scare Actors were neither scary nor
funny. The house was itself was too short, especially considering the very
large line that we waited in to see it. Speaking of the line, the queue was a
total wreck. The line was huge, reaching all the way down to a service road.
However, as we were waiting the line grew shorter by the minute, which made
those entering the line feel the need to jump over the ropes, rather than walk
all the way down to the end. This caused the ropes to droop and sag, which
didn’t look very good. Anyway, bottom line, this house wasn’t good in any way,
shape or form.

“Scare-Zones” that were well themed and filled with terrifying Scare Actors.
That was not the case this year. In this incarnation of Halloween Horror
Nights, the Scare Actors were advertized as creatures freely roaming the
grounds, causing panic and mayhem wherever they went. The reality of the
situation was that, yes, the Scare Actors could freely roam… but only in the
area to which they were assigned. And the groups of Scare Actors, ranging from
creepy children in Halloween costumes to Vampires to Walking Dead Zombies (more
on them in a second) would rotate around the park throughout the night. Larry
and I had a good time sitting at Mel’s Die-In watching the women from the burned
down prison chase people with chain saws. Otherwise, these creatures were more
or less boring. Or, in the case of the Walking Dead “Walkers,” confusing. See,
the Walkers outside the exit of the Walking Dead house didn’t do a whole lot of
interacting with the other people. The area was dark, and small, which meant
that it was very crowded. Because of this, it was difficult to tell who was a
zombie and who was simply walking with cheap shoes on. I enjoyed playing the
game “Zombie or Hipster,” even if it was only with myself.

not this year, but I see myself going back in the years to come to see what

October.

Well kiddies, for all of you faithful fiends who have patiently waited a whole year for that event that literally defines the month of October, never fear. You’ve rounded third and are heading for home.

That’s right boys and girls. It’s time again for the World Series of fears, for another round of screams and laughter built around a handful of haunted houses, roving monsters, eerie music, scary lighting, tons of fog and bars every hundred yards or so selling drinks so expensive that they come with a mortgage.

In short, Halloween Horror Nights is back.

Don’t expect a home run from the 22nd incarnation of Universal’s seasonal candy corn, though. This year’s event features no central theme, no icon character, no discernable scare zones and, apparently, no real attempt at organization at all. In short, the event is kind of a mess. A friend of mine mentioned that he thought the idea behind the disorganization had to have something to do with all of the massive construction going on throughout the park. “While all the work was going on,” he said in a positive and somewhat forgiving tone, “they unearthed a lot of non-specific creatures that just roam everywhere, not in some specific confined area.”

Which, when you think about it, is a lot like saying “Uh, oh, company’s coming but we have other things to do and not a lot of time for preparation. So let’s just throw something together and hope nobody notices”

And that’s pretty much what Horror Nights 22 looks like.

That’s why there’s decorations on the streets but none with defining characters reacting around them. What monsters there are on the streets don’t stay in one place, they just seem to roam around. It’s an odd assortment too. There are ninja kind of warriors, sort of, with massive amounts of tattoos and some sort of spear sword. No idea what they’re supposed to be, although they do sort of look like something out of some video game or other. Then there are guys with big pumpkin heads left over from one of the scare zones last year, stilt monsters in black robes with skull faces on both sides of their head and black wings and zombies that stumble around the exit to the Walking Dead maze. These guys at least stay in one place most of the time, although the area was so dark it was hard to tell them from the stumbling guests that had been making multiple visits to one or more of the bar kiosks where it seemed to be the Happy Hour of the Living Dead. I know because I heard someone order a stiff one.

One thing that has become a tradition on the streets of Halloween Horror Nights are the riotous ruffians wielding roaring chainsaws throughout an unsuspecting crowd. Horror Nights 22 is no exception. The chainsaw maniacs are once again in the house. There is one slight change, however. All the chainsaw maniacs this year are chicks. That’s right, the big scary dudes in leather and tattered clothing have all been replaced by really angry women in orange prison jump suits.

Talk about PMS.

The tattooed warrior video game type guys aren’t scary, especially if you have a healing spell somewhere; the pumpkin-headed guys look as left over as they actually are; stilt monsters aren’t frightening in the least unless you’re simply scared of one falling over on you; the zombies are good except for the fact that you can‘t see them; and the chainsaw chicks are just plain silly.

Since these scare actors aren’t part of any particular zone and sort of move around in a group, there is a good chance that you won’t see any of them at all.

So here’s Larry’s scare factor for the Universal streets: Zero.

Of course, the majority of the scares at any Halloween Horror Nights comes from the numerous haunted house mazes scattered throughout the park. For the past few years there have always been eight houses. But since the former Amity/Jaws area (which last year hosted the absolutely terrifying Saws and Steam house) is mostly bare dirt behind construction walls, there’s no place to put another maze so this year there are seven.

This might seem like kind of a gyp since the price of admission doesn’t reflect the somewhat diminished aspects of the overall show. In fact, it may seem like one less maze means one less place to get scared. But take heart. The length of the lines will scare you to death. Working in tandem with the lack of scare zones, one less house results in one absolute terrifying nightmare of a wait in the rest of the house queues, to say nothing of the lines for the two shows.

I’m thinking, in fact, that the catch phrase in all the Horror Nights ads, “Once you’re inside, there is no way out,” refers to the queue lines.

And if that aspect isn’t scary, I don’t know what is.

Fortunately, the event planners have placed kiosk bars in all the queues near the entrance followed by lines of port-a-potties at the end. This way you won’t have to face a two-hour wait without the benefit of a stiff one, and since you’ll be doing the back and forth zombie shuffle inside the ropes for so very long, you’ll be able to get rid of that drink before actually entering the house. Of course, by then you probably will have forgotten the name of the house you were waiting for. But at least you will have had time to get to know your date better.

Since there is no theme to Horror Nights this year, the house topics are fairly random, ranging from classic movies and cable television shows to aging Vegas acts and even older rock stars. The seven houses are, moving clockwise around the park, Universal’s House of Horrors, Alice Cooper’s Welcome to my Nightmare, Penn and Teller’s New Las Vegas, AMC’s The Walking Dead, Dead End, Gothic and Silent Hill.

Since time is a premium, and I figure you’ll just have enough of it for a single show and a visit to maybe three of the houses, let’s rate them from worst to best, excluding Silent Hill since it’s based on a video game and we decided up front that it was probably a waste of time.

Actually, we should have made that determination about the year’s worst house - which, oddly enough, also had the longest wait - Penn and Teller’s New Las Vegas. Last year Horror Nights featured it’s first 3D maze based on a storyline of a group of teenagers who inadvertently opened a portal into an alternate universe. It was not only good, but it was considered by nearly everyone to be the hit of the show. This year, the maze named after aging but notable Vegas comedy magicians Penn and Teller has the honor of featuring the 3D effects that so wowed the crowd a year ago. Unfortunately, aside from the three-breasted showgirl, the effects are totally impotent in this limp, mindless, forgettable waste of time. There are characters inside, although none of them are monsters, or for that matter, particularly scary. In fact, the scariest character in New Vegas is the
animated puking prop at the entrance.
Larry’s scare factor: zero.

Next up is Alice Cooper’s Welcome to my Nightmare. I was actually looking forward to this one since it was said to be one of the all time favorite mazes at Universal Studios Hollywood’s version of Halloween Horror Nights. It‘s based on aging rock star Alice Cooper’s popular mid-1970s album. The best part of this maze is the Alice Cooper soundtrack. Unfortunately, you do need to be a lot older than the average age of most Horror Nights enthusiasts to remember many of the tunes. But it doesn’t take a fan to realize the topic is insanity since you find yourself wandering through an insane asylum. The overall look is quite good. Of course it isn’t any different than any of the other asylums-based mazes featured at nearly all of the other 21 Horror Nights shows. And while there are plenty of hanging rubber corpses throughout the maze, the characters behind them aren’t particularly frightening. They’re crazy, demented even, but not really scary. The scariest character in the whole maze is, in fact, a grizzled looking Alice Cooper in a Mad Hatter-size hat leering down at guests from a balcony in the final scene. It’s actually kind of sad. Looks like school’s out forever.

Larry’s scare factor: zero.

At least Universal’s House of Horrors isn‘t sad and pathetic. This beautifully designed and lighted house pays homage to the most venerable of Universal Studios long line of movie monsters. Found along the twisting corridors are none other than The Wolf Man, Dracula, Frankenstein’s monster, the Mummy and the Creature from the Black Lagoon. There are many awesome aspects to this house, not the least of which is a four foot high narrow corridor into a pyramid that you have to practically crawl through before the mummy(s) jump you. The theming is wonderful. The decorations rock. The lighting is as good as it gets and the characters are classics. Unfortunately, there isn’t a single scare in the whole maze since the characters are about as scary as the rotating figures on top of the Monsters Café sign in New York. That doesn’t mean that

Unfortunately, Larry’s scare factor: zero.

You’re probably saying to yourself, “Wait a minute! That’s half the houses! Isn’t there anything scary at Horror Nights this year?” Well, once again, take heart, because we’re about to enter the high scare area with AMC’s The Walking Dead. This house is, of course, based on the cable television show which is in turn based on a series of wonderful black and white graphic novels of the same name. The house begins in the same place as the series, namely at the front door of a hospital where the recent dead - those that haven’t decided to sit up and take a stroll, anyway - are wrapped in sheets and piled in heaps. From there it’s a tour through the zombie apocalypse. The winding pathways take you through hospitals, department stores and even back yards that are devoid of folks but brimming with zombies. They jump at you from windows and through the broken boards of fences. The sets are creepy and so is the light. The scare actors stay in character and the make up is awesome. The only thing that surprised me is the fact that AMC’s The Walking Dead is a house. I really expected it to be a scare zone like the one featured at Horror Nights 16 called Deadtropolis where the whole New York area was cordoned off like a scene out of a Resident Evil flick and a zillion zombies were shuffling after everyone they could find. Oh, that’s right. I forgot. Walking Dead is a house because there aren’t any scare zones this year!

Nonetheless, Larry’s scare factor: seven.

Next up, and even scarier, is a house based on a good old fashioned haunting called Dead End. It’s a tour through a house filled with broken toys and dusty furniture and a dazzling assortment of ghosts and special effects. Some of the scares in this house are the oldest in the book, like one scene where there’s a couple of benches filled with seated mannequins. Only one isn’t, and she’s the one that pops up and scares you to death. This is old school Horror Nights, but it really works. Then there are faces appearing in sheets, transparent ghosts in window glass that suddenly jump at you out of doors. It’s a classic and very scary ghost story.

Larry’s scare factor: nine.

And here, finally, is the best of show, the maze to give you nightmares, the one, the only, Gothic.

This is the story of a cathedral under renovation. Unfortunately, the demons and ghosts that have taken residence inside aren’t happy about it and decide to strike back. Expect one creepy set after another. Expect the statues to come alive. Expect to see stone demons flying over your head. And a cross isn’t going to help you in here, because you’re already in a church. This is the only house or outside area where I’ve ever known a stilt walker to be scary. I’m not telling where he is. But he looks like a statue. And you’ll come out of your shoes when he comes alive. We were following a couple of teenage girls who screamed themselves hoarse in this house, and for very good reason. This is the kind of house filled with the kind of scares Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights built its reputation around. It’s definitely not to be missed.

Larry’s scare factor: a solid ten.

There are also two shows featured this year at Horror Nights, Bill and Ted’s Excellent Halloween Adventure in the Universal amphitheater at the rear of the park and Twenty-Penny Circus; Fully Exposed in the Beetlejuice Theater at the edge of the New York area. Since neither were previewed due to lack of time, were I to have to chose between them, I’d see Bill and Ted.

Bill and Ted’s Excellent Halloween Adventure is a traditional, yearly parody of all the news and entertainment events of the previous year. It’s always a musical romp and a rousing good time. Unfortunately, despite the size of the amphitheater, it won’t be a walk on this year. Expect a one to two hour wait. And yes, there is a bar nearby the wait area. And a restroom too.

Halloween Horror Nights begins tonight, Friday, September 21 and runs on selected nights through October 31. Prices for admission vary, and certain discounts are available. Express passes that help avoid most of the wait times are also available for at an additional cost. Horror Nights is considered an adult event that is inappropriate for children under ten. Costumes are not allowed.

Happy haunting.

As we did last year for Halloween Horror Nights, we've created a map and touring plan that will get the most value for your time and money this Halloween season. If you follow the map and plan listed below, you're sure to catch everything.

A note on Scare Zones:
Unlike years past, there are no definitive "Scare Zones" in the park. Instead, the street-bound Scare Actors are free to roam wherever they see fit, tormenting anyone that gets in their way. Here's the catch to that: while there are no officially themed zones, there are clearly defined areas that the Scare Actors have to stay in during their time among the public. These areas are marked on the map with a yellow skull and crossbones. The touring plan allows you to walk through each area in an effort to see as much as possible. However, the street Scare Actors this year also rotate all around the park in groups, so there is always the chance that you will end up missing a certain group of characters, like the chainsaw wielding women's prisoners or the vampires. Stick to the plan and you'll see as much as possible in the shortest amount of time.

House #1 - Universal's House of Horrors
As you enter the park, make an immediate right and head through Hollywood. This will take you through the first area featuring the street Scare Actors. Continue past Mel's Die-In and through Central Park, which features the second area of Scare Actors. Make a right and head into Kidzone. Stay right and you'll see the queue for the house near the exit to the ET Adventure.

House #2 - Alice Cooper - Welcome to my Nightmare
The exit for the House of Horrors will lead you parallel to the entrance of the Alice Cooper house. Make a u-turn to the right and enter the queue which leads through the pre-show area of a Day in the Park with Barney.

House #3 - Penn 7 Teller New(kd) Las Vegas
Again, the exit to this house runs right next to the entrance of the Vegas house. Once you hit the street, make a sharp right and you'll see the entrance to your right, just before the Men in Black: Alien Attack restrooms. The area right in front of MIB is also another place to see Scare Actors.

Show A - Bill & Ted's Excellent Halloween Adventure
Depending on what time you get out of the Vegas house, you may have a great opportunity to see a Halloween Horror Nights tradition: the Bill and Ted show. This show has been around featuring various pop-culture references since HHN's creation back in 1990. If the show times don't work for you, you can always try back later in the evening, especially if the current show looks crowded. People love this show, and the early shows will fill up quick.

House #4 - AMC's Walking Dead
On the way to this, you'll walk through another one of the areas featuring street Scare Actors outside the exit of the house, which is right next to the entrance to Disaster! The entrance to the Walking Dead house is just to the left of the Beetlejuice's Graveyard Review stadium, which is home to...

Show B - 20 Penny Circus: Fully Exposed
Once again, seeing this show really depends on when you arrive in the area. This is a new show for the event, so it may also fill up during the early shows just on curiosity alone.

House #5 - Dead End
Regardless of which place you come out of, the Circus show or the Walking Dead house, you'll head through New York to the next house on the plan, Dead End. On your way you'll visit another area featuring the street Scare Actors. The entrance to Dead End is just to the left of the Macy's facade, on your right as you approach Twister.

House #6 - Gothic
The exit to Dead End leads you between Twister and the Universal Music Plaza. Make a left at the corner by Aftermath, the Twister store (a), and enter the Twister queue. The Twister queue is also the Gothic queue.

House #7 - Silent Hill
You exit Gothic the same way you exit Dead End. When you reach the end of the street by the Aftermath store, make a right this time (b). Go past the Music Plaza and on your right will be the entrance to Silent Hill.

After you exit Silent Hill, the rest of the evening is up to you. If one of the houses was not open, or the line was too long or you want to see one of the shows this is the time to do it. If you're too tired or you've just had enough, the exit is to your right, past the Universal Studios Store.

Good luck!Universal Landinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06398843906144607117noreply@blogger.com0
